Are there AI tools for selling metal buildings, and what can they actually do today?
Short answer. Yes, and the useful ones do a narrow job rather than a broad one. In Machinae Build the language model has exactly one task: turning the buyer's sentence — "60x100 shop with two 14 ft roll-up doors, 16 ft eave, in Austin TX" — into a structured specification. Everything after that is ordinary code: the structural system is routed from the clear span, the code check is deterministic arithmetic against a versioned rule file, the quantities are computed and the building is drawn. The model is never asked for an opinion about code, which is why the same design returns the same findings every time. What it is not is an autonomous salesperson, a pricing engine or a source of engineering.

Where the model stops and the arithmetic starts
The split is the whole design. One model call parses the description into a specification; the schema it is given contains no advisory fields, so it has nowhere to put an opinion even if it formed one. From there the deterministic half takes over: the structural system is chosen by the clear span and eave height, the design is checked against ASCE 7-22 with IBC 2024, the 2021 IECC with ASHRAE 90.1-2019, and AISI S100, S240 and S400, and the findings come back as blocker, required, recommended or info.
That is why a code finding here is reviewable: it is a rule in a file with a version on it, not a sentence a model produced this morning. Which model does the parsing is a deployment setting rather than an architectural commitment — changing it is one environment variable.
What AI does not do here
- It does not decide the structural system. The span and eave height do, through code — tube steel to about 60 ft of clear span, cold-formed steel to about 70 ft, red-iron PEMB above that.
- It does not generate the code check. Deterministic arithmetic against a versioned rule file; the same design produces the same findings on every request.
- It does not price anything, negotiate, follow up, or write to your customers.
- It does not replace an engineer. No output here is a permit set, and every building still needs a licensed engineer's stamp for its county.
- It is not trained on your designs. There is no training pipeline in this product; the description is sent to a model provider's API to be processed, and account details never form part of that request.
